Fall 2009 Soccer In Edgewood
Thursday, 27 August 2009

SoccerIf you wait until the fall to decide whether your child will play soccer or not, it could be too late.  It is important to understand which soccer programs are available and what you should be registering your child for as soon as possible.

Here is some basic information about the soccer programs in our area.

About Scarsdale Recreation Department Soccer Programs

In Fall 2009, Edgewood will enroll more than 15 teams, from 3rd to 8th grades, in the Rec League.  Games will start on Saturday September 26th, 2009 and will run for 9 weeks.  All levels are welcome.  No tryouts necessary.  In addition, parent coaches will run clinics for Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade following the Micro-Soccer program.

 • Grades K, 1 and 2 have five Saturday Micro-Soccer skill training sessions followed by clinics held by parent coaches at Edgewood elementary school for the next 3 or 4 weekends before the end of the season.  Parent coaches-run clinics can be started prior to the end of the Micro-Soccer sessions. Micro-Soccer is conducted by professional instructors and high school players and parent coaches are welcome to assist during the the sessions – coaching instructions will be available at no cost!  The cost per child for the five Micro-Soccer sessions is $60.

Approximately half the time of the Micro-Soccer sessions will be devoted to developing fundamental skills with the other half devoted to small-sided games (3v3 for K, 4v4 for 1st graders, and 5v5 for 2nd graders).

Tentative Micro-Soccer sessions start times for Saturdays 9/26, 10/3, 10/17, 10/24, 10/31:

- K girls: 12:30pm; K boys: 1:30pm
- 1st girls: 2:30pm; 1st boys: 3:30pm
- 2nd girls: 10:00am; 2nd boys: 11:15am

  • 3rd, 4th and 5th grades: A nine week league schedule, and a scheduled practice with the team coach during the week or weekend throughout the season.  The teams are Edgewood-based and games are held against teams from other Scarsdale areas.  Optional weekly academy style practice sessions are also available for those who want more soccer for an additional fee via http://www.sportssignup.com/.

Tentative game times:

- 3rd & 4th grade girls - 11am or 12:30pm
- 3rd & 4th grade boys - 2pm or 3:30pm
- 5th grade girls - 11:30am or 1 pm
- 5th grade boys - 1pm or 2:30 pm

6th grade, 7th and 8th grade: The Rec Department proposes a "Pick Up Soccer Program" where players will meet every Saturday at the same time (tentatively 9am), be divided in teams and play in a game format.  In case the registration numbers are high enough a league may be run for 6th graders and/or mixed teams among the grades.

SoccerPlayers must wear a school-colored T-shirt, shin guards, and soccer cleats.  T-shirts can be purchased from the PTA Clothing Committee.  For team coach practices the coaching equipment is provided by the Edgewood Athletic Association.

From K to 8th grades, there is a mandatory online registration on the Village website at http://www.scarsdale.com/, under Parks & Recreation section; Sports Center; Child League Registration.  Please register by Friday September 18th, 2009.  The grade Coordinators and coaches for grade 3rd to 8th (see list below) will use the registration information provided by the Village to form teams and contact the players prior to the start of the Rec League or clinics for grade K, 1 and 2.

A separate registration is necessary for Micro-Soccer.  More information and forms for Micro-Soccer registration are available at the Village Rec Department and Village website.  The Micro-Soccer registration deadline is September 18th.

Families must pay their Edgewood Athletic Association dues for their children to participate in the Rec League.
