2007 Winter Basketball Programs In Edgewood
Thursday, 08 November 2007

Edgewood BasketballRec basketball will begin in mid-November, with practices for grades 4-8 scheduled to start shortly before Thanksgiving, and clinics for grades K-3 to start in December.   Both games and clinic seasons will extend into March 2008.  It is important that parents contact the appropriate grade coordinator if their child intends to participate.

Rec basketball consists of several different programs, with separate teams for girls and boys. All teams are Edgewood-based.

Edgewood BasketballGrades K-3 have Sunday clinics, in 50 minute sessions, held in the Edgewood gymnasium. The clinics will begin in early December. The cost for the entire season is $40 per child, to defray the janitorial and heating expense of opening the school on Sundays, which have increased by 50% over the past two years.  The $40 fee is in addition to your EAA Dues.  All families who have children who will participate in the Sunday clinics must be paid members of the EAA.  EAA representatives will be on hand at a table outside the gymnasium on the first day of the Sunday clinics, December 9th, to collect Sunday basketball fees as well as EAA dues. Please be sure to make your payment on December 9th.

Sunday clinics will be held on the following dates: 12/9, 12/16, 1/6, 1/13, 1/27, 2/3, 2/10, 3/2 and 3/9.

The following is the list of coordinators for each grade and the expected scheduled times for each clinic. If your child is interested in playing, please e-mail the appropriate coordinator:

Grades 4 and 5 play games against other Scarsdale neighborhoods, usually on Saturday afternoons. The Edgewood teams will be formed, and the schedules set, after the total number of children participating is determined, so it is essential that you email the grade coordinators to let them know of your child's interest. There will also be one practice each week, usually on a weekday evening at Edgewood.  Again, the schedules cannot be made until the number of teams is determined, so contact your grade coordinators right away.

Edgewood BasketballGrades 6-8 will play games against other Scarsdale neighborhoods, usually on Saturdays, with occasional games on Friday nights. There will also be one practice each week, usually on a weekday evening at Edgewood. The primary difference between the program for 6-8th graders and the 4-5th graders' program is that one "A" team is formed in each of the 6-8th grades, to play in a separate "A" league against the other Scarsdale schools.

The "A" team is for children whose skills may be more advanced and are looking to compete at higher level.  The "B" teams are for children looking to compete in a friendly sports environment.  The Scarsdale Recreation Department requires each neighborhood to only have one "A" team for each grade and each "A" team is limited to 8 players.

Tryouts for the "A" team will be held the week of November 13th at Edgewood, as follows:

Tuesday 11/13
7th Grade Boys: 6:30 pm - 8:00pm

Wednesday 11/14
6th Grade Boys: 6:00pm - 7:30pm
7th Grade Boys: 7:30pm - 8:30pm

Thursday 11/15
6th Grade Girls: 6:45pm - 8:30pm

Friday 11/16
8th Grade Boys: 6:00pm - 7:30pm
7th Grade Girls: 7:45pm - 9:30pm

Saturday 11/17
8th Grade Boys: 12:45pm - 2:00pm
6th Grade Boys: 2:00pm - 3:30pm

Coaches of the 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams will serve as evaluators. They will be assigned to evaluate players in grades they are not coaching to make the evaluations as impartial and as objective as possible.

Any child who is not selected for the "A" team or who chooses not to try out for the "A" team will be assigned to one of the "B" teams for that grade. The Edgewood teams will be formed, and the schedules set after the total number of children participating is determined, so it is essential that you contact your grade coordinator to let them know of your child's interest as soon as possible. It would be helpful (but it is not at all mandatory) if you would indicate whether your child intends to try out for the "A" team.

Please remember to wear blue Edgewood T-shirts to all games. Families must pay their Edgewood Athletic Association dues for their children to participate in any of the basketball programs.  EAA Membership Forms may be downloaded from the Membership Page of the EAA website.
